This looks FABULOUS! Makes me look forward to reading Jack’s Insects with my younger kids all the more.

  2. simple home

This is great! I am planning to have my daughter read Jack’s Insects independently this year. The description says this is self-directed study, so I am assuming my 9 year old can use this like a workbook to compliment her readings?

    • Sonya Shafer

The notebook was written as a self-directed supplement, yes. I would recommend you download the free sample and see if it would be a good fit for your daughter for independent work.

  3. Michelle

What about using this with older children??? What are your thoughts?

    • Sonya Shafer

It all depends on your goal, Michelle. If your older child would be interested in this study, by all means use it. I don’t think, however, that it would be enough to count as a high school science credit. So if you’re not worried about credit hours at this point, enjoy!

  4. tgorton

I looked up most of the additional books listed for each lesson at my local library and they do not have any of the titles e.g. Insect Investigators by Spilsbury. Do you have any suggestions on other resources that I can use for these lessons for my 5th grader? Thank you.

    • Sonya Shafer

You might check to see if your library can do inter-library loans and request books from other libraries; you could also see if you can find any of the books used online for a small amount; or feel free to just look in your library for other books that cover the same type of insect mentioned in the lesson and use those instead.

  5. Dederyoung1

Is this book for the whole year?

    • Sonya Shafer

Yes, the book is designed for a full year of science two days per week. You will find a suggested schedule inside that will guide your student through the year, outlining which portions of Jack’s Insects to read and which portions of the notebook to complete each week.
