Language Arts

Students progress in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and English usage guidelines using the literary passages presented in Spelling Wisdom, Book 1, and the guided discovery lessons in Using Language Well, Book 1. The first half of these books was covered in grade 3, the rest is completed this year.

Written narration is introduced to encourage your student to begin capturing his thoughts on paper and applying guidelines he has learned about English usage and mechanics. Rubrics and further instructions are provided in the Using Language Well, Book 1, Teacher Guide and Answer Key to help with this process.

Science

Use any of our SCM living science courses—such as Learning about Birds with Thornton Burgess or Jack’s Insects and its corresponding narration notebook—and feel free to combine your children in grades 1–6. These plans will remind you when to do the next science lesson and keep you moving at an enjoyable pace, with some catch-up days included. Journaling a Year in Nature is recommended for nature study.

Math & Typing

Lessons include reminders to work on your choice of math curriculum and typing program.

  1. Patricia

Hi, just wondering what happens with this part of the day once they move on to grades 5 and up. Also, I have a daughter in grade 4 and a son in grade 1. We started home schooling this year. For my son it seems like an easy transition. As for my daughter, I am having a hard time planning since some of the things covered in grade 4 were started in previous grades, like spelling and language arts. What do you suggest?

    thank you

    • Sonya Shafer

We are working on more Individual Studies plans and hope to provide them for all the grades in the coming years.

If your daughter is struggling with jumping into the middle of Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well, feel free to back up and start at the beginning instead. Just change the lesson numbers in the plans to reflect the point you think fits her best. It’s more important to teach the child than to stick to the curriculum plan.

If, however, she is doing fine with the spelling component and you simply want to make sure she has the benefit of all of the language arts lessons in Using Language Well, you could verbally go over Lessons 1–70, a few per week, if you want to.

thats great…. thank you so much…

I just want to say I love Simply Charlotte Mason Curriculum! We have used it for 2 years , and I am currently looking right now to get our curriculum for fall 2018. I notice you add typing in 4th grade, which is the grade my oldest will be going into. Is there a typing program you recommend because I have no clue about typing?

    • Sonya Shafer

We’re still looking for the “perfect” typing program that we can recommend wholeheartedly, Ashley. My children used Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing when they learned many years ago, but there are many more programs available now. Here are a few that have been discussed on our forum.
      Typing Web
      Typing Instructor
      Typing Club
      Mavis Beacon

This has made my days easier, more organised, less stressful, thank you!

Hi, question, regarding Using Language Well and Spelling Wisdom: if the students will complete the last half of this book this year; because the first half was covered in grade 3. And my daughter will be new at this material, I am wondering if it would be too much to complete 2 lessons instead of one in order to catch up with the lessons of the first part.

    • Tamara Bell

We do not encourage doubling up on lessons. Any student who gets through Spelling Wisdom 4 by graduation will be well on her way to excellent spelling, English usage, and grammar for life.

    Thank you Tamara!
