My daughter is a voracious reader! Can you please give me your top 10 must-reads for an 11 year old girl for her personal reading time? We need to build our library! 🙂

With pleasure!  But, before I write a list, can you tell us what kind of books/topics/styles your daughter prefers?  Or does she enjoy everything?

    • Jane of Lantern Hill
    • A Little Princess
    • Rainbow Garden and everything by Patricia St. John, especially Star of Light, The Tanglewoods’ Secret, Treasures of the Snow and The Secret at Pheasant Cottage
    • Little Women (unless you think she’s not up to that yet)
    • if you want to try a Jane Austen, Persuasion is my favourite, and it’s shorter and easier than some of the others
    • Black Beauty
    • Mary Jones and her Bible
    • Madeleine Takes Command
    • Caddie Woodlawn

And I totally agree with the above suggestions of the Little House books, Anne of Green Gables, the Grandma’s Attic series, Heidi, and Understood Betsy. All great books!

The other posters took a lot of my suggestions. Here’s what I would add:

    Katie John series

Horse books by Marguerite Henry (if she hasn’t read them already)

    Black Beauty

    Strawberry Girl

    Thimble Summer

Emily’s Runaway Imagination by Beverly Cleary

    The Wheel on the School

Cricket in Times Square and its sequels

Charlotte’s Web and Trumpet of the Swan (if she hasn’t read them already)

Noel Streatfeild books (Dancing Shoes, Ballet Shoes, etc.)

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy! 🙂 The reading lists at Ambleside Online are so good, too.

http://instagram.com/kyriemead shares books her girls are reading. I get a lot of ideas from her.

    A Little Princess

Mandie series by Lois Gladys Leppard

Grandmother’s Attic series of four books

Little House on the Prairie series

    Pollyanna

    Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

    Heidi

    Anne of Green Gables

American Girl historical fiction: Kit, Samantha, and Felicity series. These character movies are good, too.  (We don’t care for the other characters, especially the modern girls)

Boxcar Children series, first 19 original books

If you want a series, Trixie Belden — I loved those books as a youngster.  Now my nearly 10yo is into them.  And my 13yo dyslexic daughter picked one up the other day.

Thimble Summer is one of my all-time favorites. For many years, I read it aloud every summer. *goes to find copy for this summer*

    Rascal

Edward Eager “Magic” series (Half Magic, etc.)

Lois Lenksi books – sometimes hard to find, but so worth it!

Danny the Champion of the World – less dark humor than many other Roald Dahl books

If you can get The Armourer’s Daughter by Rosemary Sutcliff, it is worth every penny.

Freddy the Pig books by Walter Brooks

    Indian in the Cupboard series

    My husband suggests The Hobbit

My youngest daughter suggests Chronicles of Narnia, Flame-Coloured Taffeta by Rosemary Sutcliff, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

    Betsy-Tacy series

All of a Kind Family series

    Pippi Longstocking series

I’m sure I’ll think of more, but these come to my mind for now
