Does anyone do a version of schooling year round (3 months on, 1 month off, or any other variation?)  We do a traditional school year now, but I can see the benefits of something else.  Just curious if anyone has attempted this. 🙂

We school year round and always have – I have a 365 day chart that I tick off the days we do school and we take all national holidays off, also two weeks at Christmas, the rest of the time we take off where we need to for vacation – a long weekend or whatever. We like to take time in the fall and spring and then school through the hot summer months. I make sure we do 180 days, but we usually end up doing way over 200 and that is fine – it gives us a lot of freedom and we like it that way. We need the flexibility for medical reasons. Good luck with your new plan if you do it. Linda

We school year round and always have too.  We generally start a new year in June or July and take breaks whenever we need them—-with almost all of December off (still do some math) and a few weeks at the end of each year.

This coming year, I am going to try a three weeks on, one week off schedule (still with December off)…..we’ll see if that works to help us really focus and go strong for a few weeks without my feeling like everything home/house related goes out the window for too long (and becomes stressful)….I still can’t seem to get everything done all at the same time!  LOL  We’ll see if it works, of if we just naturally go back to our ebb and flow sort of schedule.

Our plan is to do a light school in the summer.  (last year was our first official hs year, and I had a baby in July – so we took last summer off.)

My general plan is to do our usual daily subject a couple of days a week… and then something totally different… this year I’m thinking of doing the “Drawing with Children”.  And lots more nature study will happen in summer too.

This year we went to a year round school.  We start after Labor Day, take Dec off, the month of easter off, and August.  Because we practically have 9 mos of winter its nice to be able to do school related stuff outside during the summer months.  We also are able to participate in various summer programs and count them towards school.

This will be our second year of doing “year round” schooling.  We start on Memorial day.  Besides taking off several weeks at Christmas, and then some here and there, I don’t really plan out our breaks.   I like to take 4-6 weeks off for our summer break, as well.  I really need a definite ending and beginning time for each school year, with a decent break.  I am not a big fan of the summer heat, so I’m glad to have school to keep us a little busy.  My school age kids are only in 1st and 2nd grades this year, so it will be interesting to see if this schedule will work for our family as they get older.

I like having a light schedule of math and reading during the summer a few days a week. I don’t want to have to review math every August for a month! We start with all the subjects in Aug/Sept then wind down in the spring and onto light schedule in summer. We go outside first on hot days then school in the afternoon. I like the flexibility of taking off to travel or when we are sick any time of the year. Smile We definitely do a full schedule during the winter months because we hate to be outside when it’s freezing!

We used to do year round schooling. I loved schooling year round b/c it gave us the freedom to take breaks whenever we needed to take them. However, the last two years we took the summers off. This year, we’re getting back more to the year round schooling we used to do except our school work will be lighter for the summer. We plan to do at least reading and math. For reading, it will include what my daughter will be reading on her own as well as things we’ll read together. We will continue our Bible reading and Scripture memorization.

We school 4 days a week year round. That extra day gives us a day for errands and appointments. We still get our 180+ days in and we take 2 weeks off in December, 1 week off in May, June and July. We go August 1st-July 31st. This was our first year doing it this way and we LOVE it! My husband works odd shifts and gets 3 vacations per year and 2 off those have to be taken during non-summer months so it’s nice having so much flexibility and never feeling behind. God Bless!!

We’ve always schooled year-round.  Our 180th day of school for this year will be Monday.  We’ll take a couple of weeks off and start back on June 10th, which is the first day of summer violin lessons.  We live on a farm and own our own business so it’s great to have the flexibility to work around those schedules.  Of course, our business and farm are a big part of “school.”

We do school year round and 4 days a week with occasional Fridays for catch up.  Mid August we start our full schedule through end of April.  Then May through beginning of August we do what I call summer school, what that means is we do spelling & math (2 things we don’t want to try and remember), we do a critical thinking book, we learn the pledge of the allegiance (so that my little ones don’t get forgot as they grow up), we memorize a poem (If by Kipling this summer), continue with our sign language (only reviewing not adding anything new) and my favorite nature study which is so much more enjoyable.  I don’t count days as my boys don’t do great with any lengthy breaks.  They do better with a light load as apposed to nothing.  So summer takes about an hour M-Th.  I’m sure if I really looked we school way more than the 175.  But maybe I should keep track this next Aug 2011 through July 2012?

We school year round and have since the beginning taking breaks as need be. I have a plan that has varied from 6 on/2 off to 3 on/1 off, but it’s never worked out just like that and it’s ok. I’ve taken a couple months off with each of the last two babies, we’re on a light month right now while overseas on a mission trip. We don’t count days, but we don’t take more than a couple of weeks totally off.

I hope to finish this year in July and start my new year in August, but we’ll see how it goes.

    Hello,

This has been on my mind a lot lately.  Maybe it’s because we’re nearing the end of this school year and I can see the emptiness of summer days, maybe it’s because I’m feeling tired of the same old and want something new…who knows.  Anyway, I’m really considering schooling year round.  The children can’t believe I’d say such a thing, but I think it would actually be better because we’d be guaranteed more frequent breaks.  And while breaks from school sound good I wonder what you do during the “off” time if you school 3 weeks on, 1 off or some other variation of that.  I’m thinking some extra breaks spread throughout the year would be nice and would allow for service projects and those subjects that get pushed aside because we run out of time.

So, thanks for reading my ramblings aka “thinking out loud.”  Any tips on how you make schooling year round work would be much appreciated.

This year I’ve really done 3 on and 1 off. We finished the first two terms and it’s worked very well. Next week begins our last term of 12 weeks.

During our off week, we finish any straggling assignments from the previous 3 weeks, but this is usually a minimal amount of work. Reading always continues, but not assigned reading. We use our off week for travel, field trips, hair cuts, zoo visits, shoe shopping, deep cleaning and organizing, you name it. Any project or idea that requires more time than I can give it during school gets pushed to our off week. By having an off week every month, it means none of those BIG projects have to wait too long. It works for us and I intend to continue it until it doesn’t work.

I also lead a CM co-op and we adopted the same schedule of 3 on/1 off. It’s been terrific for us. I also take 2-3 weeks at Christmas, 2 weeks for Spring Break and 2-4 weeks for Summer break (not all at once.)

    HTH,

We school year round (usually 4 days a week, simply because my husband currently has a 4 day a week work schedule)  with  about 2 weeks off around Christmas – New Years.  We take a week off for Thanksgiving – but we usually go on a few educational field trips – so that counts as schooling for us.  We always take birthdays off (4 in total – we don’t take mama and papa’s birthday off).  We take about 1 week off in August when we visit relatives on Long Island and we take two weeks off at some other point to go on vacation.  And when we feel burnt, we may take a day or two off here and there.  So I would think we take off somewhere between 8 – 10 weeks off a year from sit down school work – but a lot of our time off we fill with educational field trips.  We are super flexible, and we always take breaks for “spring days”.  Public Schools get “snow days”, we get “spring days” !!  Kids Love them!  School is canceled due to nice weather!

There was a thread about this just a few days ago.  I’ll find the link.
