Xeriscape Nature Study

I have scheduled a guided nature tour at a local Xeriscape garden for several families.  We will have freedom after the tour to journal on the lawns.  However, I’d love to offer some ideas for a more living book study for families prior to the tour or following the tour.  Are there any suggestions for book suggestions?  Something like My Side of the Mountain except for we are in the Rocky Mountains. TIA!
