I was just wondering what others use for vocabulary/word study. My daughter uses a lot of words out of context, so I thought it might be good for her to do something like this. Can anyone compare MCP Word Study with Wordly Wise? Or is there something more CM you would recommend? My daughter has dyslexia, and she has some processing difficulties, so choosing something that will work for her is sometimes difficult.

We use Maria’s Words for all ages. http://www.marieswords.com/

This box comes with a lot of different cards.  As you see from the site one side has a picture to help associate the word with the meaning.

For my kids 7 and younger we just work on memorizing the definition and remembering the synonmys and antonyms.

For my kids 9 and up we do the above but also use it for dication & copywork.

The pictures are a major bonus for our family because the cards hit all the big ones – visual learners and the ones who do well just repeating and everyone inbetween.

Good luck there are a lot of great programs out there.

Sorry:) She is 10, 4th grade, but not on level. We were using the Barton Reading System for her dyslexia, but stopped in November. I am glad I did. I feel I was holding her back because in CM Companion, Karen says that CM said controlled reading was twaddle:) My daughter is able to read more than she was getting in Barton. I do need to make adjustments for her. She is still doing some phonics, and she can read from what is considered emerging reader books, with occasional helps. She did not have any speech problems. In fact she talks too much sometimes:) She will use words she hears, but many times they don’t make sense. I thought maybe it would benefit her to do something like this. Or should I just pick words from the books we read and have her learn the meanings and write them in a notebook? That is what we have done in the past.

I’ve been doing a word-building activity with my daughter. She’s reading on a 2nd grade level now, but needs help with word meanings and language. So when we read a selection, I pick out a word or two and do a word-building activity with them the next day. I try to limit the words to 5 or fewer and usually only 1 or 2 that I think may be new to her.

For example, last week she read a poem that used the word knee. So the day after that reading I wrote knee on the white board and we discussed what it was, then made some new words from it: see, free, tree, flee. We talked about each one’s meaning and she likes to make up sentences using the words, which is great because then I can tell if she really understands them. I figured flee would be new to her and it was, so we had an opportunity to discuss it, make up a sentence with it, and help expand her vocabulary a bit.

I wonder if you could do the same with one or two of the words you notice her using incorrectly or just with a word or two from her readings. It’s a gentle and oral approach based on one of the ways Charlotte taught reading. Just an idea.

    Misty,

That program sounds good. Annie does learn better with pictures, so this could work for her. I was waiting to see if Sonya has any other suggestions. I need to be very sure before I order. Over the years I have bought things that I end up not using or that do not work. I definitely will consider those. Thanks.

I replied too soon. Thanks Sonya. I have just been trying to get things in order since we stopped Barton. I will probably just do as you suggested for the remainder of this year and see how it goes. An actual program will wait until fall if I feel I need it. My goal this year is to be more thrifty. If I can accomplish it without buying a program, that would be great. We’ll see what happens.
