Word Problem / Living Math Text?

Does anyone know of a full text or curriculum that is made up of entirely applicable math problems?  I know David Smith’s Math texts are somewhat that way, but is there another option out there?  What about for Algebra?  Something as an alternative to cold problems?  Something that puts the concept in to a real application?  Middle / High school levels.

Thanks for any help … I’ll double check old posts and the book finder too.

Claire, I’m not sure about the Algebra level as I haven’t gotten to that yet, but Ray’s Arithmetic is full of word problems. It’s my go to source in younger years. May be worth checking.

I use the Strayer-Upton Practical Arithmetic texts which are similar to Ray’s Arithmetic and have plenty of real life, old-fashioned word problems along with lots of practice computation work. We move into either Paul Foerster’s Algebra texts with Jacobs Geometry or the amazing series called The Art of Problem Solving. If I see a child with a natural love for math theory, I prefer The Art of Problem Solving (but Foerster’s Algebra is my personal favorite and a classic).

Thanks everyone.  I’ll make a note of these for planning.

On the Math Mammoth site she sells a series of books called “real life math” – I haven’t ever seen them, but they might suit your purposes since they include volumes of higher maths.

Take a look at them here: http://www.mathmammoth.com/worksheets/mirl/
