Hello….I’m wondering if anyone has used Word Mastery for their phonics/reading curriculum.  If so, please give me your thoughts.

I am presently using this with my ds8 and we are loving it!  My son actually looks forward to doing his reading lessons and is making great leaps!  I tried Alpha-Phonics but he did not like it at all, however AP worked just fine for my dd.  I recommend Word Mastery as often as I can.  I get a kick out of the fact that it was written in the 1800’s (I think!)

As far as the program goes, she has a really good “system” for introducing new sounds and words.  We make sure we master the page we are on before proceeding to the next.  It’s not flashy by any means but there are some relevant pictures here and there.    We are working on words with two vowels (ea, oa, oe…).  The explanations on the page are very brief and you are left to work through the words together.   One thing I like is that the words, while having the same “ea”  souns are all very different, for example:  peach, bead, leaf, speak, heal, squeal, beam, stream, lean, easy, wheat, weave and so on.  It is wonderful to see my son’s eyes light up after reading a whole page of words, it motivates him to pick up his leisure reading books and work his way through them!

I really like this way of learning to read.  It’s non-intimidating for the student and is so very well though out.  I hope you decide to use it, like I said before I recommend it as often as possible!

We began school yesterday and my 6yr old has enjoyed the lessons.  She had no interest in learning to read last year and was easily frustrated with our attempts so I didn’t push her.  It looks like this system will work well for us.  Thanks for your thoughts.
