Can anyone recommend any good picture books for winter? I need some good light reading for my DD-7 and almost DS-4 1/2. We have The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, and the only other book I found on this site rec’d was Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton. We just read A New Coat for Anna last week. Thanks!

MonicaParticipantBackyard Birds of Winter by Carol Lerner
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, illus. by Susan Jeffers
Waiting for Winter by Sebastian Meschenmoser
Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft
The Big Snow by Berta Hader
Snowsong Whistling by Karen Lotz
Those are just a few that we’ve enjoyed over the past several weeks.
csmammaParticipantIn addition to those mentioned, here are more of our favorites:
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolan
- Stranger in the Woods by Carl R
- Annie and the Wild Animals by Jan Brett
- The Mitten by Jan Brett
- The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett
- The Ox Cart Man by Donald Hall
- Thy Friend Obadiah by Brinton Turkle
Blessings,
Heather

Definitely more picture than reading, but we love Carl at our house!
TristanParticipantDid anyone mention The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino? Beautiful children’s picture book on the science of snow.
We also loved Snowflake Bentley by J. B. Martin – it won the Caldecott and tells the story of Wilson Bentley and learning how to photograph snowflakes. If memory serves me right he was homeschooled for part of his life.
csmammaParticipantI almost forgot about James Harriots Christmas Day Kitten and Smudge the Little Lost Lamb – both stories set in winter I believe.
csmammaParticipantLol I couldn’t resist, I found more winter books on my sons book shelf this afternoon..
My First Little House Picture Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder:
- Winter Days in the Big Woods
- Sugar Snow
- Christmas in the Big Woods
Happy Winter and Happy Reading! 🙂
artcmomto3ParticipantThanks! What a great list! If you know of any other non-snow winter books I’d love to hear those too. It looks like there may be a couple here already.
Wings2flyParticipantI’m so glad you asked this. I have been keeping my eyes out for such books at the library. We enjoy Jan Brett’s books. Here are two more of similar titles:
The Missing Mitten (she loses her red mitten when she built her snowman and discovers it is the “heart” of the snowman)
and a Mathstart book by Stuart Murphy: Missing Mittens
jmac17ParticipantWe just enjoyed “The Longest Night” by Marion Dane Bauer, about some animals trying to bring back the sun during the longest night of the year.
