OK it’s only begun to be cold & nights get dark so fast (we live in MN) so I’m wondering what some of you do in the eveings so as not to get trapped into the same old same old?  We do at least one quiet night, we do one movie night and then what with the other 5 nights?  I’d love to hear what you do.  Thanks Misty

Family Game Night is one favorite in our house.

Your question also reminds me of something that we haven’t done in a while.  Each member of our family writes down one thing that they would like to do on a slip of paper.  It might be to play a particular game, do a craft project, bake something, etc.  Then we put the slips of paper in a hat, draw one out and then do that activity as a family.  Usually we have done this when we have a weekend day at home and do several activities, but you could spread it out over a period of several nights, doing one or two things each evening.  Eventually you get around to doing something for everyone.

Hope this helps – I’ll be looking forward to others responses as well!

I have only done this once, but it was fun!  Got the idea from a book by Edith Shaeffer’s (wife of Francis Shaeffer, mother to Susan McCaulley Shaeffer who wrote ‘For the Children’s Sake.’)   She made scavengter hunts with poems.  Like start with a slip of paper that said, ‘the first clue is read and under the bed.’  Then maybe in a book under the bed you could have the next clue, ‘the next is pink and under the sink..’   And so on (hers were better!)   Sounds time consuming, but she would think of clues as she washed dishes, etc.  Older kids could help.  Just a thought:)   Then a treat when all done.  Blessings, Gina

We have a games night also; a night of music – everyone plays a piece they’ve been working on for violin/piano/guitar, and maybe some singing;  one night of looking at stars/finding costellations (we try to choose a “warm” night – we’re in central Alberta); at least one night of craft projects or similar activity (woodwork/weave/knit/sew/cross-stitch); we fill in the other nights with reading aloud.

I like the scavenger hunt idea!

We had Family Game Night yesterday evening, and it was fun! We played bingo then read two chapters in Little House on the Prairie. If any of your kids like to sew, you could have a family sewing project. I read a book a couple of years ago, called Mrs. Sharp’s Traditions, and it had tons of family evening ideas appropriate for every month and season.

    Other ideas:

a family baking night (especially for homemade Christmas gifts)

other games like Charades, Mad Gab, Monopoly, Life, etc.

D.E.A.R. night (Drop Everything And Read…we used to have these in school, and I remember them being so fun! We could wear our pajamas, bring a pillow and blanket, and read all day long. You could adapt it to be in the evenings).

Housecleaning Party…we have these about once a month in our house, and they really do end up being fun. I always print checklists with jobs for everyone. Sometimes we race to see who can finish their tasks first. We crank up some good cleaning music and everyone does their allotted tasks. The kids always win because they have fewer jobs, so then dh and I usually start a movie for them while we finish mopping, vacuuming, or cleaning the kitchen. It’s a great way to get everyone involved in a good housecleaning!

That’s all I can think of right now. You’ve gotten some great ideas!

This may sound silly, but in the winter we turn our dining room table into a ping pong table. We bought a couple cheap paddles and balls from the dollar store, throw the leaves in the table, and line up soup cans as our net. We usually do this one night a week. Also, we play “low” kick ball, creating bases for the boys to run in the house – luckily we don’t have too many breakables LOL.

We also have “board game” night, “movie/popcorn” night, “audio book/handicraft” night, “get out & build-a-snowman” night, “Wii sports” night etc… these are pretty random however.

You have lots of great ideas so far. Have fun this winter!

What a fun topic! Something we do occasionally in cold weather is “campout” in the house.  We push furniture aside and set up our smaller tent, tell/read stories by flashlist, drink hot chocolate, etc.  Our boys think it’s so fun and beg to do it again.

Thanks you have given me some new things to think about.  Can’t wait to try them out on my family!
