Next year I will have a 2nd grader and a 4th grader.  It is hard to believe we are moving up to the next set of books in the history module!  For the books that are for 4th grade and up do I read them aloud or does she read them independently and then narrate?  I figured at least for any books where my younger child is involved I would read them aloud to both the children, but I wasn’t sure about the upper elementary books.  If she reads them independently, do I read them ahead of time so that I know she is narrating everything and grasping the material?

Grades 4+ should move into reading independently and then narrating to you orally. It’s moving them further into self-education which is, as Charlotte says, the only real education. It’s always a good idea to read the books ahead if you can, but don’t stress if you miss one here or there. If you know their narration ability, you’ll be able to tell if something seems off.

Also, you can just have the child bring you the book and  you can quickly glance through to get some idea before they start talking. Or spend a few minutes reviewing what your child will be doing during your prep time for the day or week.  You’ll get so you can tell how they are handling the material even if you only have a brief familiarity with it.

Thanks!  That is what I was thinking but wasn’t sure.  I think she actually enjoys reading alone more.  She has started doing that for her Apologia, and as a result has appreciated what she is learning much more.  So, I guess for now we will keep family studies as read aloud.
