What grade level?

I have a child with an early September birthday. How much of a jump is there from the individual grade guides? How would I know if should I lean toward the earlier or later grade level?
Do not focus on grade, but ability.
Early Sep I would likely go with the lower level, as with a Sep birthday I “hold back” even though our schools have a cut off date of late Sep. Talking to teachers and other parents, there is no rush to start formal academics even though there can be a lot of pressure from others to start, do what works for your child.
The benefit of homeschooling is you can teach the student where they are at, mixing and matching levels to match abilities with out having to do just one grade level.
