What do I need to use Math-U-See?

I mentioned my confusion about MUS in another thread (and thanks to those who answered me there), but now I want to make sure I am ready to start my girls using MUS. I looked at their website, but I’m still a bit unsure, so I thought I would ask those who have used this math series here.

For Delta, I have on hand:

    Instruction manual

    Student text

    Test booklet

DVD (yay! I found that I do have it!)

For Algebra I, I have on hand:

    Instruction manual

    DVD

I also have a large bag of those colored cubes that fit together (Unifix Cubes, I think?) and I have a set of those light blue base-10 things with the hundreds flat, tens rods, units cubes. I don’t know if those would be useful for MUS lessons or if I have to have their manipulatives.

If anyone who has used this can tell me for certain what I need, I would appreciate it.

And other questions regarding the manipulatives — would the same manipulatives be used in Gamma and Delta?  Would I need two sets — one for each child?

My kids share their blocks; there is plenty for both. Plus, one may be watching video while the other is using the blocks. Even if they’re working on lessons at the same time, there’s plenty, imho. I think you might need the blocks from MUS as Mr. Demme refers to those (uses them in the videos) and it may be confusing to try to tweak that, but maybe others have. I just bought the blocks because tweaking doesn’t usually work in my hs.

Not sure if the same blocks are used throughout texts…we are using 2 different levels right now and use the same blocks, but we are in the beginner levels. I’d assume that you do, but we aren’t there yet.

You really need  MathUSee manipulatives; they are color-coded to match the books.  You need one basic set of manipulatives; I’ve never had more than one basic set and I at times had 3 children in the books at once.  We just usually weren’t needing them on the same day and if we did, I bumped the day around a bit so they weren’t working on math at the same time.

How old is your Algebra instruction manual?  If it’s spiral bound and not perfect bound, you’ll need to download the answers to the Honors pages from the website; also several of the lessons are in a different order in the new student books and you’ll need to adjust and download the corrected answer materials on the internet.  For algebra, in addition to the regular manipulatives, you need the Algebra and Decimal Inserts.

So, am I correct in thinking that I would need to purchase (for both girls) the regular manipulative set, and then for Algebra, the A & D inserts, the student text, and test booklet? If that’s it, then I’m off to spend a little money (hopefully, little) and I’m good to go!

    Thanks.

Yes, that’s what you will need.  The student books are hard to pick up “used” of course; most of us write in them.
