Any thoughts on the book Waverley for a 10th grade boy? He will begin the second term of Early Modern in September.

    Hi Sandra,

Though I haven’t personally read it, I know Waverley (and Scott) was popular with Charlotte Mason and her students.  My 14-year-old boy will begin Ivanhoe Term 2 this year after reading H.E. Marshall’s chapter on Sir Walter Scott in History of English Literature.  I believe Marshall’s book can be found for free on the Baldwin Project if you are interested.

I’ve been meaning to look up the exam questions for Scott from the PNUS so if I find anything, I’ll let you know.  I do remember that Charlotte referred to Waverly as a good example of the way of the will in the case of one not training their will.  I hope both our boys enjoy Scott and find that “sense of the spaciousness of the days” to which Charlotte refers.

    Best,

    Richele
