Hi, I’m planning on using SOTW for history and the Visits To series for geography with CMs Elementary Geography. But I can’t decide which visits to Series to start with. My kids are 1st grade and Kindergarten and since we’ll be doing some map work as part of SOTW for ancients, that maybe we should do somewhere altogether different, maybe Europe. Suggestions please.

Also, I have both CMs Elementary Geography and Longs, which is best for my kiddos?

    Thanks

This is personal opinion, but I find Story of the World to be very dry history. As an adult I might enjoy it as it is filled with facts, but my kids would not.

What ever “Visits To…” you use, you will probably love them. They have been great for our family, easy to use and great to do for most all ages, though I would wonder if geography is needed in book form at those ages. I would think putting together a few US or world puzzles would be enough, or owning a globe and looking up the locations of stories as you read them. There are some great thoughts on what Miss Mason taught about geography here http://sabbathmoodhomeschool.com/2016/02/physical-geography-for-elementary-school-students/

And for background, we have only covered American history, ancient Egypt, and are currently going through ancient Greece. We have used The Light and The Glory for Children for American and then the history lesson plans that SCM sells for the ancient history.
My 7 yr old isn’t loving the SCM books (my 9,11,12 and 13 yr olds love them), but he has issues with paying attention at the moment. He does love The Light and the Glory and we just started reading together A Child’s History of the World by V. M. Hillyer. There is evolutionary thought at the beginning of the book, but it started a good conversation about creation, and it isn’t dry at all. It’s quite a fun read. We have only been reading it for a few weeks now, but I think it’s a keeper.

I know, not quite the answers to the questions you were asking, but I hope some of this information might be useful.

I don’t have a full answer for you but I have visits to Africa to do with Genesis through Deuteronomy… My oldest is 1st grade so I am skipping all the country maps but egypt. I am really looking forward to it. I like how it ties to Egyptian history. I think you could just pick any one if you don’t want it to go with your history. They all use the same 2 spine books so pick 1 this year do a different one next year. You can’t go wrong.

Agree ou can select any of them to use. We have used almost all of the Visits To and enjoy them so much every year! You could do North America because it is “local” or you could select an area that you will be studying for history.

For non readers the kids color a map as I tell them the countries. It is fascinating how they remember with such a simple process.

We did Africa 4 years ago and thr kids still remember quite a bit and where the countries are located.
