I’m fairly new to the boards, but not to this site 🙂 I’m currently trying to pick a grammar selection for next fall and I’d love to hear how these two compare. Pros and cons of each?

I have a soon to be 5th grader so that is who this would be for.

    Thank you!

I have not used First Language Lessons, but I can definitely recommend Using Language Well and Spelling Wisdom, Book 1 which has 140 lessons and is recommended for grades 3-5.  My ds9 has completed the first 60+ lessons.  The lessons are gentle and simple and he is retaining the information easily.

    Here is our schedule:

Monday:  {Grammar lesson 1}  Read and follow the instructions, then copy the passage on paper (I usually discard this paper after he completes the spelling portion).  Sometimes there are points (rules) to write in his English points journal at the back of the book.  This usually takes less than 15 minutes.

Tuesday:  {Spelling ex. 1}  I dictate the passage, and son writes it in his spelling notebook.  I just watch and make sure everything is spelled correctly and then we are done.  This usually takes 10 minutes.

    Wednesday: Grammar L. 2

    Thursday:  Spelling ex. 2

Friday:  Day off or make-up day

My son seems to have a knack for spelling, so the work is not difficult.  I will start at the beginning with my daughter who will be 8 this fall, and we will aim for 1 lesson/week and go at a pace that suits her abilities.

The passages are so much more interesting than the long lists of words I used to learn to spell in school.  Some of the passages come from books we have read, while others are new and spark an interest for us.

I am truly thankful for these resources from SCM.
