We have had the Rod and Staff builder books for two years now and I have been moving slowly through them. The more I learn about Miss Mason and how a living education really looks, the more I see how most curriculum does not fit.

I have the Spelling Wisdom book and also the Rod and Staff Preparing to Build books.

Would you replace R&S with ULW ?

Short answer: Yes. Yes, I would.

Full disclosure: I have not used ULW yet, though I own the first level. I will begin it either next school year or the year after with my last student. But I have used Rod and Staff. It is thorough, it gets the job done, but it is joyless, in my experience. I’m sure it works well for some, but if you have a choice, lean towards CM!

    YES!!!
It feels so DRY and repetitive and very un CM so I don’t know why I held onto it for so long. I guess because I had not realized that grammar could be so living 🙂
It feels good to let things go.

Well, don’t sell yourself short. Not all kids (or parents) want grammar to be living. I think my current student will love ULW, but my middle one did just fine with Rod & Staff. She likes the mechanics of grammar and was happy with a “get ‘er done” approach. So, we use what works, right?

But, yes. It feels EXCELLENT to let things go.
