I thought I had my year all planned out but now I am uncertain. My to be 8th grade ds is finally ready for some written narrations I think and maybe some grammar. He is typically a late bloomer in most areas and we have to play catch up when the time is right. So this year our focus will be on writing and I was all set to use Harveys Elementary Grammar and Composition (the price tag is very appealing). But my heart wants to switch all my kids to ULW. We already use SW and love it, ULW just makes sense. My hesitation is my 8th grader still being in SW book 1. Looking through ULW book 1 I see he has pretty well covered all the topics. I was searching through other posts and saw Sonya suggested doing ULW 4 days a week but only doing dictation for 2 of the 4 lessons. Would it be reasonable to follow that schedule for the next 5 years? Or would we be overwhelmed. That way he could get through all 5 books. Could I skip the second half of SW 1 and just place him in SW 2 and ULW 2, or would the dictation be too difficult? I am not planning on doing AG, although I may do grammar review and “official” essay writing in late high school, depending on his needs and goals. He is pencil phobic so I want to make the best use of any writing he does. I think dictation and written narration is the way to go, but I want some instruction and guidance also, for both of us. Any ideas? Suggestions?

    thanks

I think you’re right, doing ULW 4 days a week for 5 years could easily be overwhelming. If he has covered all the topics in ULW1, you could go ahead and start SW2 and ULW2. The dictation passages start short at the beginning of each book, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. If you find that the passages are getting too difficult to accomplish two per week, you could back off and do both ULW lessons but only 1 dictation per week, giving him an opportunity to study it several days.

    Just some ideas.

Thanks Sonya, I went ahead and purchased SW2 and ULW2 for him. I think I am going to shoot for 3 lessons a week but probably only dictate 1 of the passages. I will have him transcribe the other 2. That way we can move a little faster but not so fast as to overwhelm or discourage. Does that seem reasonable? I think I will have him do written narrations on the alternate days. That way he is only doing 1 significant writing exercise per day.  The SW has improved his spelling so much I love his resource. I cannot wait to get started with all of the other SCM resources this year.
