I am planning on doing Dictation and PLL with my 4th grader, do you think I could put off typing for a year or so?  I don’t want to overload my daughter since I am starting her foreign language this year as well.  I just wanted to see if there was any special reasoning behind adding in typing this year, or if it is just because this is the year that formal language arts is not recommended.  I would take the year off of Language Arts and follow the recommendations, but I feel like this area has been very weak so far in our homeschool and I wanted to take this year to iron some of that out.

    Thanks!

I just wanted to say that my son will be in 4th grade as well and he will not be doing typing this year.  We won’t even be starting a foreign language yet.  He was more challenged by the learning to read process than my older son, and he still needs to work on more phonics and cursive handwriting.  I don’t want to bog him down so I’m not adding anything else.  Also, he has to do language arts this year because he really struggles with it and I feel like we must continue on gently but consistently.

    Bumping up…

Sonya, is there a reason typing is recommended to begin in fourth grade?  I am just wondering if it would be a big deal if I put that off until 5th or 6th since we still need to concentrate on Language Arts right now.

    Thanks!

No problem at all, Heather. You can insert typing whenever it works best.
