My first grader is a budding reader and loves it. She wants to read constantly. I’m looking for some ideas that are books she could read but aren’t twaddle, any ideas of some good books? I’d like for her to be able to read them herself.

Please give us some ideas of what she has read so we know her reading level.  We used many of the readers from Sonlight.  My daughter liked the Biscuit dog stories; not sure of it’s twaddle rating, but cute.  And many non-fiction animal books.

Our favorites are McGuffey Readers, Arnold Lobel books, The Beginner’s Bible, “I Can Read” readers (Rainbow Resource carries many of these), Rookie Read About Science (I get these at our library), and the Nature Readers from CLP.

Billy and Blaze seemed to be the biggest hit for our two during their first grade year.

If they are a bit more advanced, The Adventures of… books by Burgess are a favorite here. There are a lot of book titles and short chapters.

Tough to know what to suggest because big differences in ability in the elementary years 🙂
