Can anyone tell me if Truthquest history is good for children with receptive language and other language processing difficulties. My 12yo dd has these difficulties, so in reading some of the Truthquest Beginnings guide (I want to start chronologically), I became a little concerned. Maybe it is the vocabulary. If I pick out words that may be confusing to her, and go over the meanings of those words before we read, maybe it would be okay. I want to find some good living books to supplement, so this may help as well. Other history books I have looked at have concerned me as far as vocabulary and/or style. I like the way the Guerber history books are written, but I think they are a little too much, given her language-based disabilities. I read somewhere that they really are best suited for an older grade range than what they list them. My daughter’s level would not be in line with her age. I feel like I need to keep the readings a little more simplified, as she has difficulty storing a lot of information/detail. Is Truthquest a good choice in this situation? I already bought it, and I want it to work, but started having these concerns.

Have you joined the TQ yahoo group?  You would probably get a very helpful answer there, even from Michelle herself.  The Beginnings guide is very different from all the others.  There aren’t nearly as many living books for beginnings history so much of that part of the guide is Scripture and Michelle’s commentary with a few living books where they can be found.  Many families use that guide as their Bible study with the advantage of history being thrown in.  I haven’t used it at all.  We do our own thing for Bible and we had already been using TQ for years when Beginnings came out.  Hope you get some answers.

Egermeier Bible storybook should help for the scripture readings.

My favorite is A Living History of our World.  It is understandable for my younger children.

Robin, Thanks. I will look into the Yahoo group. Choosing history has been a challenge. I kept going back to HOD because I like the choice of books. But, I finally came to the point where I knew I had to piece together my own stuff, allowing more focus on the 3 R’s. My daughter has very little concept of time and even detailed mapping is futile, because of visual perceptual difficulties. She loves to hear interesting stories form history, and does understand why certain things happened, but she needs to have things ordered for her. That is why I want to start at the beginning and just work through as we can. I want to do a pictorial timeline, similar to what they offer at Homeschool In the Woods, as she learns best with pictures. I will probably end up with pictures all over the house until we are finished:) I will definitely go the TQ group. Didn’t realize there was one. I appreciate the help.
