I’m looking at the TruthQuest History and only see American History for grades 1-5. I’m trying to put together a high school American History course for my soon-to-be 9th grader. Does anyone know if there is any American History for that level in the TruthQuest series?

Have any of you used the TruthQuest material and would like to give your opinion as to whether the grades 1-5 American History could be used as a spine for the high school level?

I’d really love to have your input!

Age of Revolution 1,2,3, covers American/European history.  I haven’t seen the American history guides (we are Canadian), so hopefully someone else can guide you there.

The American history guides are recommended for 1-5, but the guides have book recommendations for all grades.

For example, in the second guide for American History, Under the subject of the life of Abraham Lincoln, they list lots of books for K – 12.  Some of the higher grade books are:

Abraham Lincoln by Janet and Geoff Benge
Life in Lincoln’s America by Helen Reeder Cross
    Lincoln Stories by Honore Morrow
Nation Torn by Delia Ray, Ch. 5

I do not have HS grade level kids, but I would use this as a spine.  I think it would work well.  For a HS’er, I would pair the commentary with the adult version on The Light and The Glory for a spine.

They have a lot of extra resources listed to go with the series. Are there any of the resources that you find necessary?

For those of you that have already done or are currently doing American History with a high schooler, would you share what materials you used and how you structured your American History course?

Mrs. K I will be doing AH with a 10th grader next year and my plans are to use:

Notgrass Exploring American History (book 1, 1st semester, he’ll do book 2 next year)

    Under God (Government 2nd semester)

TC American lit. lectures and reading select books recommended in EAH

Thinking Like A Christian (additional Bible)

Easy Grammar plus (he still needs grammar work)

    IEW US History writing lessons

    Teaching Textbooks Geometry

Elementary Greek 2 w/New Testament Reader

Apologia Physical Science (because we have it and he’s done Biology already)

PE, composer, artist study will be done with his younger brother and I haven’t made a list of who we’re going to study yet, this year.  Hope this helps some.

Forgot to add that he’ll probably be reading Famous Men of Modern Times for his world history or George Washington’s World or both, lol

The American History guides could be used BUT the Age of Revolution (AOR) guides have much more indepth commentary. They take the students MUCH deeper into the issues surrounding all the history “happenings”. The AOR guides do cover all of world history (American and other). AHYS guides are a “happier, positive, simpler” view of American history for younger kids as they aren’t ready to deal with all the issues at those ages.

If you were to cover all three AOR guides you would cover all of world and all of American history. They (American and world history) are intertwined.

Is there a particular reason that you are wanting ONLY American history?

Des, thanks for sharing what you will be doing for American History with your 10th grader.

Rebecca, I just feel that my DD13 needs to spend time focusing on American History this year (or we may spread it out over two years). Of course, we have covered World and American history throughout the elementary/middle school years. Now, at the high school level, we’ll go more indepth. My plan is to cover American History in-depth this year (or we may even spend two years on it). Then we’ll spend a year or two covering World History. I am thinking about covering government and economics over the course of four years. And we’ll incorporate geography throughout all the history studies.

This year, my plan is to coordinate history and literature by doing American History, American Literature, American Poetry, and American Short Stories. Then when we cover World History, I’ll do the same by coordinating it with World Literature, Poetry, etc.
