    Hi,

My dd is 8 yrs old (3rd grade) and she started with  some copywork last year and continuing with it this year. She wants to learn more spelling…how do I transition her into transcription? Can you give me an example(s) of what that would like…tips on how to do it?

Also, when doing transcription should I continue to have her do copywork exercises as well or does transcription take the place of regular copywork?

    Thank you

What do you mean by transcription? I think of that as just not copying word by word but reading and then writing longer chunks but still basically copywork. That’s something kids should automatically start doing on their own. Or do you mean dictation in which you say the passage to them bit by bit and they write it? If they ate transcribing, this shouldn’t be a tough transition as they are already sort of reading it to themselves first. Start small with 2-3 word chunks and build up.

    Thanks Nebby!

I was reading on SCM that transcription is the transition from copywork to dictation and I was wondering how to do this effectively.

I want to prepare her for dictation, but before I do so I would like to implement transcription as suggested. The both of them seem so close that I get the two blurred…if you know what I mean?

    Copywork has two stages.

    1. Copying: A sample is written in the same script (manuscript, cursive, italic, etc.) that the student is using and the student copies it directly under the sample.

    2. Transcription: The student reads a passage from the original source, such as a typewritten book, and transcribes it to their own paper, using their own script (either as assigned by the teacher or self chosen.) This is done once the student doesn’t need an exact model to reference in order to remember correct letter formation.

Dictation is when the student first studies a passage, then writes it from memory as it is dictated to them. The study of the passage might include also copying/transcribing it first as practice. Studying might also be practicing spelling words, and noting punctuation, grammar, or other characteristics of the passage. Dictation might happen the same day a passage is studied or another day. I think most guidelines I’ve seen say to start dictation at about age 9 or 10, or grade 4.
