Have any of you heard of the book series “The Happy Hollisters” by Jerry West? I saw this at our library and have never heard of it. My boys love mysteries and this was a series from the 1950’s, I believe. Was wondering if anyone knew about the content of these books. Thanks for your help.

We have almost the complete set, Angie. We too saw them first at our local library. They are not exactly classic literature, but they are wholesome mysteries that involve the whole family rather than the kids hiding things from the unknowing adults. We have chosen to omit a few of the titles because the wording raised a potential red flag in my mind, but there are plenty of others in the series that my girls have enjoyed over the years.

Thank you for mentioning these Angie, they look like a fun series! I think my kids will eat them up 😀

    Hi Angie,

My third-grade teacher read these aloud to us on rainy days when we couldn’t go out to recess. We all loved them so much that she began reading to us if we finished our work early – so we worked quite diligently for the opportunity to hear more of the Happy Hollisters! Enjoy!

Happy Hollisters books are among the treasures my kids have found at used bookstores. I never heard of the series before my children found a couple of old copies. Both of my kids (a boy and a girl) enjoy the books and have fun looking for them when we are in thrift shops or used bookstores.

Thank you all so much. We have been a way for a week and haven’t had access to computer. I am going to add these books to our list of read alouds. Thanks so much for the input. I truly value the advice I find here on the forum.

My mom had the entire set and she got rid of them.  🙁  I have been slowly adding them to our reading collection through Amazon and eBay.  They were our first read alouds and my son really enjoyed them!

I recently came across these entries about The Happy Hollisters, and wanted to introduce myself. It was my grandfather, Andrew Svenson, wrote the Happy Hollisters under the pseudonym Jerry West. The Hollister children were patterned on his own children: my father, aunts, and uncles.

I thought you might be interested in some exciting news! Over the years we’ve heard from many fans like you, who have fond memories of the wholesome Hollister family and their exciting adventures. Many fans want to share the stories with their children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, but don’t want to give up their collectors’ editions.  We have just released a new paperback edition of the first book in the series, The Happy Hollisters.  The story is identical to the original, with its family-friendly dialogue and charming illustrations.

If you’d like to learn more about this new edition, and see pictures of the “real” Hollister family, please visit our website: http://www.TheHappyHollisters.com or join our Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/The-Happy-Hollisters/33291503077

Thank you for remembering and supporting The Happy Hollisters!

     Sincerely,

    Andrew E. Svenson III

WOW!  How great is that??  I have many of these wonderful books in my lending library in lovely hardbacks with dustjackets and they look lovely lined up on my shelves.  They are well-loved books around here.  Thanks for letting us know.
