Can those who have used Writer’s Inc. tell me how I can use it to teach all forms of writing in a step-by-step fashion? I have to start a year earlier in teaching writing so my son, will be 11 next year, will be ready to write book reports in his second year(when he’s 12) of his bar mitzvah class; so I have one year to teach it.

I like the format and method of Meaningful Composition, but am trying to avoid buying a consumable curriculum.

    Thanks, Rachel

Giving this another “bump”.  I am planning on using Writer’s Inc. for the next couple of years with my 9th grader and planning out the curriculum is going to be one of my summer projects.  Love to hear how others may have used it, so I wouldn’t have to completely “reinvent the wheel”.

I know I’ve posted this link before, but it’s the closest thing to an example I can find:http://thecurriculumchoice.com/2010/09/writer%E2%80%99s-inc-and-write-for-college-writing-handbooks/

I’ve decided to go ahead and get the first semester of MC and have him go ahead and get started on the basics, since I’m uneasy about my abilities to teach what he needs to know. I’ll also buy a used copy of Writer’s Inc. and study and look for inspiration on how to use it.Smile

What I did was the following, sorry I missed this post earlier.

Whenever it was time to write something and whether it was a paragraph, or any type of precis, essay etc.  I would give them the pages to study for a few days and then I would set the topic of whatever I wanted them to write – they would complete the writing using the book as reference, and if I noted thay had done it incorrectly then we went over it together.  They still use write for college now, though they use it for reference mostly now.  If they had a problem in their writing I would tell them to look it up in the reference book and then come discuss it with me, if they did not understand.  I did not work through the book beginning to end – I just noted where they would struggle early on with sentence structure, or run ons and then would have them go over the section, where there was no problem we did not use the book.  The most useful was for the essays and the essay types and the literary essay.  I don’t know if that is what you had in mind or not – but that was what we did.  Linda
