  • I have a 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son, and Im wanting to teach the bible to them without it being twaddle.  Should I just read verses from the actual bible?

I do! They comprehend stories best when young, the Old Testament narratives and the Gospels are good places to start. A really nice story Bible is good too.

We have a few story bibles, but I just feel like they are not hearing the scriptures being read to them….just paraphrased stories.

A great place to begin with them so young is the verses listed by Penny Gardener – she went through with an eye for stories and divided those into daily readings.

Here are the Old Testament ones: http://pennygardner.com/oldtest.html

    And New Testament: http://pennygardner.com/newtest.html

The Child’s Story Bible by Catherine Vos is a great option too. It covers the whole Bible story chronologically, missing out only the passages that might not be suitable for children.  It’s beautifully written in a narrative style.

I agree, read straight from the bible. Makes sure they have a good understanding of Genesis 1-2 (Creation, what God made on which days, Sabbath, etc). I love the book of Genesis and so do children! We read KJV bible and The Child’s Story Bible by Vos mentioned above (based on KJV bible).

Can I jump in with an additional question that is related?  What do you do with your children that are in kindergarten but are not ready for narration along with older children?  Do you have them listen in on the older child’s Bible or do you do a separate Bible story time with them?

They can listen in and contribute somehow. Give them a Bible picture to color that’s related to what you’re reading, Bible felts, a Bible puzzle, etc. while you’re reading.

You could do one narration prompt with them sometimes and also let them get excited about what you had been reading along with the olders (you need to be animated about it, too at certain good or bad events as you’re reading). You’ll probably be surprised at what they do pick up.

I agree with Rachel.  They’ll get something out of it even if you don’t give them something to do, but it’s better to include them somehow.  We were reading Exodus and part of Leviticus at the end of this past year, and my K’er (and my olders) looked at the Rose Publishing book of the Tabernacle as we read about it.  Helped ALL of us understand what we were reading.  Also timelines are great visuals, as well, and we use those sometimes, too.

@ artcmomto3 I would have them sit with the older ones, my 5 1/2 year old loves to narrarate….I dont make her do it.  I just simply ask her what her favorite part was from the story and she goes on and on and tells me the whole thing.  There are other ways to narrate such as having him/her draw/paint a picture or do something with playdough or act it out.
