I am looking for a substitute novel for A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens. My son read it last year and really didn’t like it. Some suggestions I am seeing in My All Through the Ages book are:

    Ninety-Three by Victor Hugo

Battle of the Strong by Gilbert Parker

At the Sign of the Guillotine by Harold Spencer

Reds of the Midi (Trilogy) by Felix Gras

    Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini

Does anyone have any experience with these or a different sub for ToTC?

I really enjoyed reading the Scarlet Pimpernel in middle school. Its about the French Revolution too. It is pretty light from what I remember…

I was also going to suggest The Scarlet Pimpernel. It’s really good. I’m substituting it in place of A Tale of Two Cities for the French Revolution time period, too.

In Search of Honor is set in the same time period.

Thank you! I have In Search Of Honor and I’m sure the Scarlet Pimpernel wouldn’t be hard to find at my library.  Maybe he will read both…

    Thanks again!
