What do you use for audiobooks for all your kiddos?  I’d like to increase our listening but don’t know what to use.  Currently, we have some on cd and some on Ipad/Itunes.  If I burn it to cd it doesn’t play in all the cd players.  My cd player is broken in the van so I think I want to get away from cds.  I feel all over the place with the storage too (cds, Itunes, etc) that it makes it less convenient to grab and go.  Please share how you do this.

One student has an old ipod shuffle we were given

One has an ereader that also plays mp3’s (while reading)

One uses an old cell-phone I have that will play mp3’s.

and if necessary, cheap-generic mp3 players are available at the store for about $15 – but I haven’t tried them

(My main fun is that to move the mp3’s – well, the ipod shuffle will ONLY take it from itunes.  The ereader can take it from windows directly, but it is organized better if I use winamp to move it.  And my old phone will ONLY take it from zune….  so I am having to maintain 3 different programs to move mp3’s around!)

All of my kids have iPods. Three have iPod nanos and one a Classic iPod. We have players to plug into at home and can plug in in the van. Works great. I hate storing CDs and choose audible over CDs all the time. I have an iphone with things too. The Classic iPod has everything bc it has huge storage capacity. The nanos, my phone, and my iPad, I rotate things.

I put all of the audio books I’ve downloaded onto my tablet.  I use a podcatcher on my phone that downloads podcasts as well as librivox books (I use one called Podcast Republic, but there are many options.)  I also use Overdrive on both devices to download audiobooks through our public library.  My kids have individual tablets (we bought a bunch of BlackBerry Playbooks when they stopped making them and we bought 5 for less than the price of an ipad), so they also have audiobooks available.

For listening in the car, I have a gadget that you plug into the headphone jack of any device and then it sends a radio signal that you can tune your car radio to.  It plugs into the cigarette lighter of the car for power.

For listening at home, we either just listen directly off the tablet or phone, or I have a stereo with an audio input in my kitchen (one of the under the cupboard mounted ones) so I can plug any device into that as well.

My husband has a bluetooth speaker, so he connects that to his phone when he wants better sound than the phone speaker.

    There are so many options!

Now I’m working on digitizing all my old cassette tapes by recording them on the computer with Audacity so I can play them anywhere.

jmac17 – could you post a link to what you use in the car? The CD player doesn’t work in my vehicle and I am dragging my feet on getting it replaced so it would be great to be able to link up an iPod or something! (No aux. input option either).

Renee, If you do a search on Amazon for FM transmitter you will find several varieties. Mine is a few years old, so I can’t find the exact one online for you.

Renee, ours is a tape cassette that plugs into our iPhone/iPad. It works well.
