I’m looking for some resources to help with story writing.  I have a couple of aspiring authors who are in the middle of a large joint writing project, a set of parallel novels.  I’ve been assigned the role of editor, but because of the size of this project, I’m having trouble figuring out where to start to guide them.  I think we need to start with some foundational work in things like story structure and plot development, paragraphing, effective use of dialog, and so forth.  Most of the writing resources I’ve seen seem to be mostly grammar, mechanics, or essay writing.  This is outside of our school work, and is something that DD9 has specifically asked for.

Anyone have any recommendations? My kids are young, (DD9 and DS7) but they are fairly advanced in language skills.  They both learned to read early and are very capable readers.  So even material suitable for middle school or up could work.  I do have “Writer’s Jungle” and some other of the Bravewriter materials, and I’m rereading those right now, but I’m hoping to find something specifically geared toward writing stories.

    Thanks,

    Joanne

This may not be what you’re looking for but I’ll throw it out there just in case.  Children in my library have found it to be very helpful and encouraging.  Elizabeth Yates wrote a little book entitled Someday You’ll Write.  I believe it has been reprinted.  It’s not a formal curriculum.  Instead she offers guidance and tips on writing in various forms.  Very well done as anything by this esteemed author would be.
