I am fairly new to home schooling, just started last March. I have a 12yr and 14 yr old that have not had any foreign languages. They were in public school up until last year, and have not taken any languages. Where should I start with them, we live in FL. and I think that ASL is not accepted as forgign language for graduation. I am thinking German or Spanish. I love all of the ideas I have gotten from SCM and wished I had started home schooling sooner!!

I like Rosetta Stone. We used German version 2 for many years, and I’m finally biting the bullet and buying version 3 for my younger two. It’s for anyone – even adults – so older children can jump right in. It’s unbelievably pricey, though!

Charlotte suggests having a native speaker teaching a second language, I think it would still work fine for Middle School students. I know there are a lot of native German and Spanish speaking people in Florida, maybe you know someone who would be willing to teach? I have German friends in St. Petersburg and Tallahassee area that would be good teachers;).

We use Rosetta Stone as well, and like it.  However, agreeing with Christine that a native speaker is preferable, if possible.
