My 6 yr old will start 1st grade this Summer (we do year round schooling) and we are new to the CM approach.  I like the idea of doing chronological history but I’m wondering if it will be too difficult for him.  Our other children are younger and will probably not be sitting in with this — for this year.  My daughter will start Kindergarten in a year.  Would it be better to start with the middle ages and then cycle back around?  If we started in Module 4 this year, we could do Module 5 the following year with my Kindergartener and 2nd grader.  I wanted to start at the beginning but am just wondering if it is too difficult for younger kids?  (This year we did not do CM — but we did Abeka, community helpers for the first 1/2 of the year and a study of US history for the last few months … this study touched on Christopher Columbus, the reformation, the pilgrims, etc.).

I just rec’d the module 1 handbook which I’m going to use with my 1st grader (we are also starting the year this summer bc of year round schooling! :)). Just FYI it is pretty light and easy going. The readings are taken mostly from the Bible with 2 (I think) other books that come a little later. So, I dont’ think it would be difficult at all for him or the other ones to listen in if they want to. Its basically a good foundation in the Bible with some history running along side (for this age group btw – the older grades have more going on). I think Sonya designed the modules in this particular sequence so that it followed the Bible chronologically, which really makes good sense imo. Now, that being said, this past year (our K year) we did some American History stuff – not a lot but just some good stories to start planting some seeds. I plan on using some stuff on audio to maybe have playing during quiet play times or in the car, etc. to continue in American History and even some world history.

So, bottom line, starting at the beginning will NOT be too difficult for the younger kids – its designed very well in that regard! HTH 🙂 Becky
