I would appreciate any thoughts, comments, tips about starting with CM in the middle of their 12 school years.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I think a good place to start would be with some of Sonya’s and Karen’s articles on getting started on this site.

I should maybe clarify what I am asking for. I have one daughter going into 8th grade and one daughter going into 5th grade. We have done something different every year for the past 5 years. I want to start using CM, and I’m wondering how it will work since we haven’t used this approach before. Should we start from the beginning, doing copy work and oral narrations or should I just start with written narration and dictation? Hope I’m making sense.

    Thanks

Have they done oral narrations at all up to this point?

If not, I would recommend that you start there. Get them comfortable with giving them orally and once you start to see good consistent oral narrations then I would add in written narrations.

I know that Sonya recommends stopping copywork if they have good handwriting. But if you decide to not require written narrations from the beginning then I would definitely add in copywork.

Thank you for the tips. Last year I started them with some copywork using queen homeschool books. So they are used to doing that. I guess it’s up to me if I continue with that or not. My oldest daughter really likes copywork and the younger one isn’t too fond of it. Maybe she is just not copying the “right” things. I do think the idea of starting them with oral narrations is a good idea.
