I’m looking for a living book that I could use a spine (similar to the “spine” books in the SCM science series) to cover things like the universe, weather, or the earth.  I’d add in topical books and videos.  Any suggestions?

Signs and Seasons by Jay Ryan. Rainbow Resource is the best place to find it! It’s from a Christian perspective. Also The Story of Astronomy, by Peter Aughton, though it is more of a history of astronomy. We are planning to use both of these and a LOT of other topical living books next year for a DIY astronomy study. I’d be happy to share my full list if you’re looking for ideas!

Maybe the weather book by Eric Sloane? I think it may actually be called The Weather Book.

Signs and Seasons looks like the perfect book to go along with our study this fall. Thanks for mentioning this resource, Amanda. I’ve already ordered Wonders of Creation weather and astronomy books, but Signs and Seasons looks great. It looks like that fits more with astronomy than weather. Is that right?

Eric Sloane has several books on weather: The Weather Book, Look at the Sky and Tell the Weather, The Weather Almanac, and Book of Storms.

Yes, Signs and Seasons is astronomy. I get so excited about planning next year’s subjects (especially astronomy, it will be so fun!) that now it’s hard to finish “Birds”, haha.

I am the same way when nearing the end of a school year….. anxious to begin the work for next year 🙂  Although my daughter is looking forward to a break. Unfortunately, I looked again at Signs and Seasons and realized it is a high school level book. Because of the level my daughter is working, I think this would be too much 🙁 It looks really interesting though. Hope you enjoy it.

The Sciences by Holden is a reprint by Yesterday’s Classics and was used by Charlotte Mason.  It includes all of your topics and you can add in the Wonders of Creation books.

We will have a 6th grader, 4th grader, 2nd grader, 1st grader and a 5 year old this upcoming school year and we are doing 106 Days of Creation.  I know it is meant to be for 1-6 grades, but we are going more in depth with many of the topics.   We are also doing The Sciences by Holden as Wings2fly has suggested.  We have also ordered living books from this list from Simply Charlotte Mason for the various ages.  My son will read books appropriate for his age and some we will read together.   We are so excited!  We are trying to stay away from textbooks because that time will come all too soon!  Topics we are covering: Creation (obviously), evolution, light and shadows,  reflections and refractions, color, atmosphere, air pressure, wind, clouds, water, the water cycle, weather, rocks, gems, soil, seeds, plants, flowers, fungus, trees, the universe, moon, stars, solar system, insects, fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, the life cycle of a frog, fish, human anatomy,  the reproductive system, bones and cells,  skeletal system, digestive system,  circulatory system, man’s respiratory system, man’s nervous system,  integumentary system,  endocrine system, excretory system, muscular system and stewardship of the earth.  In addition, “The Sciences” overlaps a little and covers some of these same topics so my oldest will read some or all of this as well!  We are excited!

And then I forgot to attach the link for the SCM living science books.  They have books recommended for the topics you are interested in.

While we at SCM recommend Apologia for the middle school years,  I needed an alternative for my middle school daughter.  We used a few books by John Hudson Tiner as “spines” and added biographies and living other living books to them.  You can find his books on Amazon or at Masterbooks.  Look specifically at Exploring Biology, Exploring Astronomy, and Planet Earth.  SCM has a great list of living science books that can be added to any spine.

I should have specified that this would be for 1st, 3rd, & 5th grades.  I think the books recommended would be a bit above their heads for the most part, unfortunately.  I ended up buying Rocks, Rivers, & the Changing earth for a spine (has some evolutionary content which I will edit on the fly), as well as the Geology for Kids book from northwestrockandfossil.com.  I choose some picture books to go along with them also.
