I’m wanting to use Spelling Wisdom with my 12 and 11 year olds next year but am not sure which book (or books) to buy.

My 12 year old is what I call a “natural speller”. He can spell most words just seeing them once. He does need some help with harder words or words that have odd spellings

My 11 year old is at the other end of the scale. He has a very hard time spelling. I tried a more CM approach to spelling with him the last month we did school by having him study the words and work on the ones he didn’t know and that seemed to help. We’ve been using Sequential Spelling. He’s in the second book but I would like to try Spelling Wisdom for him too.

Any help as to which levels to pick would be appreciated!

I would probably go with Book 2 or 3 for your natural speller and Book 1 for the other. Even Book 1 has some very challenging words in it so it will not seem remedial to an 11 yr old.

    Rebecca,

If you are like me you want to see just how far Book 1 goes..or how hard/easy it is. I don’t know if this will be helpful but let me give you an excerpt from Book 1. I hope this is ok with the SCM staff..if not just delete my post.

    Lesson 59

Sherlock Holmes had been leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed and his head sunk in a cushion, but he half opened his lids now and glanced across at his visitor.

“Pray, be precise as to details,” said he.

That was all of Lesson 59

    Lesson 133 Yeilding to Temptation

“I know I ought to keep away from that garden,” said Peter very meekly, “but you have no idea what a temptation it is. The things in that garden do tast so good.”

Old Mother Nature turned her head to hide the twinkle in her eyes. When she turned toward Peter again her face was severe as before. “That is no excuse, Peter Rabbit,” said she. “You should be sufficiently strong-mineded….

For Lesson 133 what I wrote wasn’t even half of the passage.

I think it is a great resource. As I was typing this out for you I realized how much skill and brain power it would take to have this dictated to me. I’m challenged to have my ds dictate some of the passages to me also..since I am a horrible speller..and I can learn right along side him!! 🙂

    I can’t wait to begin!!

    HTH,

    Shelly
