    Hi Everyone:
We have been doing SW for 2 years now. I am realized my oldest DD (8th grade) is mostly doing passages where there aren’t many words she doesn’t know. She is on the end of book 2. (Started SCM late and started SW at the beginning). Should I start doing E/O? I remember at one time reading a child should not know/or was it, know a certain number of words in a passage to figure out where they should be? I am thinking bc she is *techniacally* behind what SCM recommends for an 8th grader, and she knows most of the words she is doing now, I would like to get her to a more challenging level? What do you all think?

    Thank you for listening.

    how far “behind” is she?

you could always just keep progressing through SW but do a 3rd passage a week until she is being more challenged/ gets up to recommended level.

Knowing most of the words is good. We usually recommend that the “sweet spot” for placement is no more than three or four unknown words in a passage. If she’s near that sweet spot, I’d probably say just keep going and don’t worry about being “behind.”

If she needs more challenge, you could incorporate some punctuation, capitalization, and grammar reviews using the passages; or if she is learning to type, she could be challenged to type the passages.

We are in the middle of book 1 in grade 6 now.  He does well with it.  I skip some passages that look easier and I think he could spell correctly.  But I test him orally first by saying the word in a sentence I make up and asking him to spell it.  This confirms if it is okay to skip that passage or not.

@Sonya Shafer, I like the idea of having her type them! Great suggestion. And thank you for clarifying the ‘sweet spot.’ Very helpful as I place all of the children!

@Wings2fly I like the idea of skipping the ones that look easier and testing orally. I’ve been doing that…..and I guess I’ve been ok to do so. Sometimes I second guess myself. Nice to know, there is someone else out there who is doing that too!

    Thank you!  🙂
