I have been using Spell to Write and Read for the last few years and would like to make the switch to Spelling Wisdon but just had one question. Do we teach any spelling “rules” with this program?

So far I have not had to teach rules.  They are not included as such.  Spelling Wisdom is great quotes taken from scripture and literature that are uplifting and character building.  As your child uses these quotes for copywork, paying great attention to detail (capitols, punctuation, spelling, etc.) they will learn how to use the language without a lot of “rules”.  So when we run across something that is a question, then I address it.  Otherwise I haven’t had any problems with “rules”.

Then for spelling, your child picks out the words that he/she doesn’t know.  They practice those words however they like until they know them.  Then comes the spelling test: dictation.  You read the passage once out loud (slowly as they write) and correct mistakes.  They do not go onto another passage until they have every thing correct: spelling, spacing, capitols, punctuation, etc…  They will learn a lot of the rules simply by seeing written language used correctly in front of themselves all the time.  It really does work for us.

You can teach the actual spelling words however you want (the words your children will need to work on in a passage) Some we teach with spelling rules and some we teach with visual memory, because after a point the rules become more unwieldy than helpful.  But you can do it how you like.  You’ll look over the passage carefully, identify words your child cannot spell, and practice on them however he or she needs to practice.  We taught most of the simple rules in the course of phonics and reading instruction, leaving the relatively complicated ones to work on visually.  Most good spellers learn to spell at least some words visually and this is a skill that can be taught, rather than being one that must be inborn.  I keep threatening to teach my dh.  Wink  Then he won’t have to ask me how to spell everything!

Thank you for your help. My daughter has had exposure to the rules so when we are working on her words, as per your suggestion, we can use them as just one more way to help learn the words.
