I love the passage in SW book 3, exercise 47 about the salesman.  It is a great business lesson on not taking a check for more than the purchase amount, or at all!  The passage concludes, “…how much money did he lose altogether?”

Please tells us the answer and why.  We can’t agree on the amount he lost!  Thanks!

That passage is from the public domain book Amusements in Mathematics by Henry Ernest Dudeney. Here’s a direct link to the solution on Gutenberg.

Thanks, Jordon.  The shopkeeper was adding in confusion, but now we understand better.  The thief got the bicycle costing £11 & the shopkeeper’s £10 from exchanging the check (which the salesman had to pay back), for a total loss by the salesman of £21.

And now I am armed with a whole book of these perplexing math problems!
