Now that I’ve given them a fair chance, and I know Ms. Mason would be fine with ditching the extra activities but I need some reassurance of just doing picture and beginning oral narrations with SOTW and ditching the activities? My oldest doesn’t seem to get the point of the extra activities. They seem to love the stories and maybe if they were older they’d enjoy them or “get them” a bit more but they seem pointless. Should I just stick with narration activities and ditch the extras? Has anyone done this successfully?  My oldest is only 6.

    TIA!

We used sotw last year and just added coloring pages and maps alongside narration.  My DC loved it and didn’t miss the activities…I think we only did one or two for the entire year.

If you child doesn’t care for the coloring or maps, I wouldn’t think twice about skipping them either…there is plenty of time for mapwork later on!

Skip the activities!!  My two older kids, who are both boys, hate extra activities or what they consider “busy work”.  They both like to do what needs to be done and move on.

My two younger kids, who are both girls, love the activities, so we’ve had lots of fun with Five in a Row and similar curricula that suits their learning styles.

With the oldest only being six, also, you’ll loop back around to this history cycle once or twice, so don’t worry about retention of lots of material at this point.

I’m going out on a limb and guessing that 100, 200, 500 years ago students learned their history without busywork projects 😉 And likely knew more about history than most do today.

Ditch the activities, they’ll be just fine with narration only!
