OK, now I know this seems silly. I want a kindle. I have looked at them. I have read some of the kindle stuff on here. I have looked at them some more. (OK, drulled on the counter) I am not sure which one to get. I am not sure how much I will be able to use it. Is it more of a luxury item and a desire. Do I really need it?

These are some of the questions that have been running threw my mind. Now, I could have gotten the Fire when they first came out but the question…. Do I really want to spend the money on something that I may not use that much?   I can’t download things where I live. I have dial-up and a old computer…. So that leads me to question #2

Do I buy the Kindle Fire because I could probably download more things from where I live. (If I am correct on understanding this.) This brings me to the question…. Can I get on it like a computer?  What about the other Kindle with 3G? I think I have to pay extra for the 3G but does it do the same stuff that the Kindle Fire does? What is the 3G for?  I am not getting the whole picture here. So this is why I haven’t bought one yet. I want the best deal and I want to know that I will be able to use it even at home. I don’t want to have to plug it into some computer somewhere or I may not use it that often. Is this going to be a problem with the plain Kindle? Do I have to have the 3G? or do I need to go for the big guns and spend the money on the fire?

I would like to download dayplanner stuff onto it if that is possiable. I do like the screen of the cheaper Kindles. The glare may bother me if I have to read something and I am in the car….(of course when my Dh is driving.) 🙂

and can you plug this into a printer? Just curious>>> incase I want to print out schedule stuff

So knowing all of this can someone help me understand what I am doing???? Or wanting??? Thanks!

Ok – keep in mind my Kindle is an older one… but I do have the 3G.

(I’m also assuming you are in the US, or Canada….)

The Kindle 3G will let you download books etc, using the cell network that cell phones use… (so if you don’t get cell reception where you live – it won’t help…)  You don’t have a monthly charge for that.  With my Kindle 3G, I can go to web sites like Project Gutenberg and download the books from there right on the Kindle.   BUT – someone here said that the newest Kindles don’t have the experimental Web Browser – so you wouldn’t be able to do that.  I can also access the SCM Organizer.    If you have a WiFi Kindle, you would either need to plug it into a computer, or have access to a Wireless Connection to the internet.  (I have a WiFi net at home… but there are places like McDonalds, etc that have one.)

So – here is my advice….   I’d see if you can find a “Generation 3” Kindle (the ones that were for sale in Late 2010 and 2011…) for sale inexpensively (IF you have cell coverage where you live) – then yes, it is worth it.  Otherwise, with your limitations, I am not so sure you would find it as useful, as you would have a harder time getting books onto it.

You can not print from a Kindle. (unless the new ones do it – but I don’t think so.)

I don’t think there is any printing availability and I’m not sure about the whole dial-up thing.  I do know that I love my kindle and use it (mainly just reading books) all.the.time.  I love it and still buy regular books.   I doubt that you would ever regret buying it.  The only thing you may regret is not getting one that can do what you’d like it to do, then regret not having that option.  I have a kindle 3G, if that matters and it does what I want it to do.  If you get the one without built-in WiFi then you always have to use this cable (comes with it) to move your downloaded books from your pc to your kindle.  With the 3G you can email them to yourself.  It’s a beautiful thing.  I don’t believe that has anything to do with whether or not you have dial-up in your home.  I could be wrong, so hopefully someone who is more tech-savvy will chime in.

You will not regret it, but just make sure you get the one you want.  Did I mention that I love mine??  I love to be able to read in the evening sipping hot tea without having to “hold on to a book”, I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true.

I’m thinking about getting the kindle fire so we’ll have two, but I don’t know that I’ll use all it’s features…we’ll see.

Thanks Suzukimom! That answered several of my questions. We do get some cell phone reception here but sometimes it goes down. We do have a little shop down the street that has a Wireless Connecton but I have never used it. I have friends that come and visit and it seems like they have trouble right in my area but I was told their is no problem down by the shop.

I will just wait and see if anyone else chimes in with some good ideas too. 🙂  thanks!

Now this may seem like a silly question but what exactly does the 3G mean? Is it a satalite connection? Where you can download more things? or is that what the Wi-fi is for?

Oh, and sipping tea and reading a book seems right up my alley! I just wish I could put all my books on my shelves on this thing!  Now, that would be worth it’s weight in gold to me.   🙂

       Sipping olive leaf tea!

Now would that be called the kindle touch?

I have the new Kindle Touch 3G.  While I am not very tech savy, I thought I might share what I do know since mine is the newest version.

The Kindle Fire is the color screen and can do more but I chose not to get that because I have heard that it is harder on the eyes to read.  I already have trouble when I look at a computer screen to long and figured I could never stand to read a book on the Fire.  The Kindle Touch screen is more like reading from a book and does not bother my eyes.  It comes in 2 versions WiFi and 3G/WiFi.  The 3G uses the cell phone network and can be used to download books from Amazon anywhere you use your cell phone.  There is no monthly charge for the 3G but the 3G version is a bit more expensive up front than the WiFi.  You can read the books without the 3G turned on so you don’t need to worry about losing your reading material when you lose your connection.  With the Kindle Touch 3G you would not be able to access any website other than Amazon.  But you can download books from Gutenburg, etc. on your regular computer and from there to your Kindle or email them to your Kindle.  With the Kindle Touch 3G you have to use WiFi to receive the books you email.  I am able to download books from Amazon using 3G at my house but I do not have WiFi so I need to go to a nearby McDonalds to access their wireless network when I want to download a book that I have emailed to my Kindle.

I do like mine.  Think of all the wonderful books I can now have on hand that I don’t have space for on my overflowing shelves.  And the fact that I can get more books because I do not have to come up with the money for the ones that I can get free.  If I had bought the books instead of the Kindle I would not have had the money to get nearly as many books as I have downloaded for free (or room in my house to store them).

And yes I love to sip tea and read in the evenings too.

Schele,  What’s your favorite tea?  I also saw the same thing about the Fire. I looked at the screen and the glare was so bad that I decided that  If I did get one I would have to wait until they came out with a non-glare screen. If that is possiable. 🙂

Ok so the Kindle Touch screen is not the same as the keyboard kind. The keyboard is older right? Is there advantages to the Keyboard being at the bottom or on the screen?   I now know that I want a 3G with Wifi for where I am at now.

Wow, who would have thought  there were so many desitions for just a little reading time with the tea! 🙂

Almost any kind of herbal tea but probably peppermint if I had to choose.

The Kindle Touch is the newer version, the Kindle with the keyboard is an older model.  If I had the chance, I would go with the keyboard.  I find the touch screen on the Touch is a bit finicky.  It does not always respond or it turns two pages at once.  It is not really bad – just an occasional odd response.  I have noticed that it does not respond to a tap that is to light or quick so part of the problem may be me tapping to lightly when I have my mind in the middle of a book plot.

I have the keyboard (of course, as mine is older) – and for a Kindle I think I would generally pick the one with the keyboard….

the main reason is that my kids can’t seem to stop touching the screen when I’m reading a book to them!  LOL.

And I LOVE the eInk screen…
