I love the method for memorizing scripture, and the idea that scripture memorization is a discipline for life, not a sprint. Does anyone have any ideas about how to handle the amount of scripture the children are supposed to learn in Bible clubs and Sunday school? We can’t seem to keep up, much less retain any of it, and my child is only 6. Anyone else have this issue? I’d love suggestions. Thanks!

I don’t know how much scripture your child has, but my son is also 6 and is in Awana – first year Sparks. (he doesn’t have scripture to memorize in Sunday School, but that may change next year). He does well with memorizing and retaining. I have not used the method suggested here, but that is about to change. I went to TTD in Nashville and sat in the seminar where Sonya demonstrated the method. My plan is to put the scriptures he learned this year in Sparks on cards and distribute them throughout our scripture box. We’ll continue to review them throughout the summer.
Over the past few months I have had DS memorize a few additional scriptures. Those will go in the box too. I don’t know how I would handle different sets of scriptures. Our Awana meets on Wednesday. If we had to work on one verse Wed-Wed and another Sun-Sun we might get them mixed together. Is this the issue your child deals with? My son does often segue into John 3:16 if he is at the end of his attention span 🙂

I use a system similar to the one recommended by SCM. It’s been wonderful! 🙂 I highly recommend it. I would just add the children’s Sunday school and  bible club scriptures into the memory box. It’s amazing how much scripture our family has memorized, and actually retained, since implementing our scripture box.

At what age do you start using the SCM box method for memorization?

I would start as soon as your child is old enough to memorize scripture.

We use the SCM method of organizing and practicing our Bible Memory verses for our family verses.  I basically ignore my children’s Good News Club (similar to Awana, I think) verses and they do them on their own.  If they ask me to listen to them recite or ask me to help them memorize them, I do— but it’s not something we do as a family. Basically, as a family, I’ve gotten in the habit of only memorizing passages, as opposed to individual verses.  I’ve seen the benefit of our girls memorizing the passages: works their memorizing muscles and they can memorize poetry, Bible verses, etc. easily; and we’ve even had preachers preach on the passages we’ve memorized – which is a cool connection for the girls and I feel reinforces the notion that they’re not the only ones who’ve read that part of the Bible.  *L*

Love, love, love the SCM method for scripture memory.  Our first year homeschooling we used MFW and the kids had a memory verse each week.  Can anyone remember them?  Nope!  The revisting them regularly is what makes it such a brilliant approach.  I have no idea how many verses we have in our box now that we’ve been at it 3.5 years, but it’s a lot and it’s amazing.  Love tucking God’s word into my kids’ hearts.

I, too, am trying to figure out how to handle the scripture memorization expectations from various areas of my kid’s lives outside our family. I don’t even try to help with verses from Sunday School classes or children’s church, but I do add into our scripture memory box the verses my two boys are learning for Olympians (a weekly bible club class). We just all learn them together. And I love the scripture memory box system! We’ve only been using it for about a year, but I’m so thankful for the way it keeps God’s Word fresh in our minds every day and helps us retain those words of comfort and wisdom and truth for the long haul. I also love that it has become part of our family culture, so that we are all growing to know and love the same verses from Scripture.

The scripture memory system on the Simply Charlotte Mason website has been very effective for our family over the years. We use cards from Well Versed Kids (Navigators–out of print) and also add in verses from church, our co-op, and devotionals, etc.

I wanted to share that you can create the same system from the Simply CM website on a mobile device using the Google Keep app. Keep is similar to a colored post-it like version of Evernote.

Simply use a label for scripture memory and use the same titles as instructed on the SCM website when you make your notes.(Daily, Odd, Even, Days of week, numbers 1-31) I prefer to set a reminder for the daily verse and archive the others. When you search by label, all the scripture memory notes you made will be on the screen together–just like having a file box.

Takes a little bit of time to set up but using Bible Gateway or the like is helpful. I am just adding as I go and use our file box for what isn’t up yet. I love having the verses on my phone and they sync to computer or any device.

I have not transferred in our monthly verses yet but I have been brainstorming. I was thinking that as you gather more verses you could add seasons to your monthly verses. (Fall 1-31, Winter 1-31 and so on.)

I am very excited to finally have a way of implementing this wonderful system in a digital format and I just couldn’t keep it to myself!

P.S. I also use Google Keep for making school checklists, to do lists and prayer reminders, recipes, you name it. Labels help keep it all organized even when you archive something. I can also share lists with my kids so they can update Keep when they complete work. I have also figured out that I can share things to Evernote which is great for my hubby because he is passionate about Evernote.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a naturally organized person. I have no connection to Google. I am just a CMer at heart in my ever ecclectic homeschool.
