Hi. I would very much appreciate any advice as to Science for 1st grade. I have noted that some are only doing Nature Study for “elementary” science. Is this sufficient or is a more structured curriculum best. Perhaps I am more concerned with making sure we are meeting our state requirements for the year (will be my first official year reporting).

I really like the idea of 106 Days of Creation, but is this a “one time” course. Should I save this for a year or two? The other Science courses I have viewed just seem too much for 1st grade. Apologia looked very nice, but again, a bit too much for 1st grade.

I would really appreciate any incite! Thank you!

If your child is 6 and will be the only child I would definitely wait on Apologia’s Elementary. If you are going to be doing Module 1 from SCM or any other History that will start with Creation then I would recommend the 106 Days of Creation. But, as always Nature Study is more than sufficient for 1st grade.

    Hello Hannah,

We have found nature study along with keeping a nature journal to work very well for Year 1. The children are fascinated and it gives you lots of time outdoors in true CM fashion. I am in Mass. so I needed to give a scope & sequence along with our books to the dept. superintendent of the local school system. I brought in a field guide and Burgess’ Bird Book and that was fine.

As you nurture your child’s innate curiosity and love of learning you’ll begin to see so much science happening around you, whether it is in baking, blowing bubbles or playing with magnets.

Do be sure to check your state guidelines.

    Best,

    Richele

My Year 1 child is using: The Burgess Bird Book, Christian Liberty Nature Reader 1, Handbook of Nature Study, occasional fun experiments, gardening, collections as interested/wanted, nature study, etc… I really feel that it is enough.

Maybe once per month you could have science saturday: freeze water to ice and thaw back, play with magnets, plant a small garden, look at rocks, talk a bit about the sun/moon/stars and how they move (demonstrate with flashlight and globe how day/night comes about), etc…testing at that age is going to be really basic stuff. No more than 5-10 mins needed at a time to cover this stuff.

    Relax, mom! 🙂
