I recently bought Considering Gods Creation. While I like it, I’m not in love with it. I’m looking ahead to next year. My 6 year old son is a nature loving kid. He could spend all day outside in any type of weather just watching and exploring if I let him. I want to do something I’ve never done, and make our own science curriculum that will meet his interests, as well as my 8 year old daughters and 10 year old sons. I have a good idea of what they want to learn about. I’m thinking about doing one or two different topics per term. The problem I’m having, is finding books that would work for their ages. Do you think I would have to have my 10 year okd read on his own to make this work?

I am planning this very thing for next year!

DS 12 and 10, with a 2 yr DD and new baby by that time. I am basing it off of sabbathmoodhomeschool science guides. While I will use a few of their guides, the other terms I’m planning myself based on her scheduling ideas. Also inspired by how SCM history modules are designed, I will read family books aloud, 1 book on the topic 1-2x wk depending on page numbers, say for physics/periodic table, 1 for nature lore once a week and that day add something to our nature notebooks from a special study of interest, and then assign reading 1 chapter book for the 5th grade ds and 2 for the 7th grade ds in a term. Once a week we will do an experiment or activity together.

For your ages, if it were me, I would pick a book everyone can enjoy to read aloud, and then add in picture and chapter books for independent reading. And probably end up reading the picture books aloud to at least the youngest if not everyone.
