Hello.  I am thinking of scheduling Swiss Family Robinson for my third grader’s Literature (family read aloud) this upcoming school year but haven’t decided on a break-down.

Has anyone done this before as a read aloud and, if so, within what kind of a time frame?

    Any help would be appreciated.

We read this aloud several years ago, but I don’t remember how long it took.  We just read for about twenty  minutes at a time until it was done.  Not much help, huh?  Be sure and leave lots of room for laughing–my kids thought this was the funniest book I’d ever read to them.

My son just finished this book.  I scheduled it as an independent read (he was in 6th) over the last two terms of the year.  Some weeks he read one chapter and some weeks he read 1/2 a chapter.

FWIW: I think we’ll be reading that as well and plan to just do our 20 min. schedule with it.

I wanted to read Heidi but haven’t found an inexpensive, unabridged copy for home yet 🙂

I like the Puffin Classics books.  They are usually unabridged.  And I like that it is stated clearly on the back if it is unabridged.  They are about $5 on Amazon, where you can usually view the back cover to make sure it’s unabridged.  I just checked, and they have Heidi.

Here’s a wonderful, unabridged, beautifully illustrated version by Jessie Wilcox Smith that we did this past year.http://www.amazon.com/Heidi-Books-Wonder-Johanna-Spyri/dp/0688145191#_

Look under the used section, not the new for the best prices. Plus, it’s a hardcover.
