So my kids are 7, 5 and 3. They love being outside and we have done nature study sporadically, but I struggle with how to schedule it consistently. My younger 2 still take naps daily, so we are stuck home during the afternoons, which I know is what CM recommends. I have tried it some in the mornings, but I feel like it disrupts the whole day. Our usual morning is together work, independent work/preschool, meeting with my 7yo, then more together stuff. How long should I expect nature study to take? Is 30 minutes enough at this age? Should I do it once a week during the 2nd block of “together” stuff?

We do nature study on Friday mornings. If we don’t do it in the mornings, it doesn’t seem to happen for some reason. It does throw us off schedule but we make Fridays a little more relaxed around here for just that reason.

We never did nature study consistently until I put it on the schedule for Friday mornings. I’m so thrilled at what we’ve accomplished and learned this year since we’ve been doing it more regularly.

You can do nature study whenever it works for your family. Remember that Charlotte was not a mom trying to balance household duties and young children. She taught in a school setting.

There is no reason that you have to fit all school subjects into a Monday through Friday schedule, either. Maybe Saturdays would be a better fit for your family during this season of life? The important thing is to find a time that works consistently for your family.

We have a more light day on Fridays and we do nature walks together on Friday mornings.

I schedule nature study for Monday and Friday. We usually only do one but that is the plan. I just like the flexibility of having it either day I can check off. Sometimes nature study ends up midweek when I walk over the bridge and we watch dolphin in the river for a bit. It isn’t ideal but watching a couple mom and baby dolphin is better than nothing even if we are 60ft above the water. (I live in Florida and my kids have pretty much lost interest in dolphin and manatee, so spoiled by our amazing ecosystem here!)
