My oldest ds is 4 1/2 and will not be K until he is 5 1/2.  I have done my research and have decided we will use Right Start math.  I don’t feel it is necessary to start him with math until he is 6 1/2 (1st grade).  However, I would like him to play the games when he is in K.  My understanding is that the A Right Start is for K and is repeated in B (1st grade). It appears the most economical thing to do is just buy B when he is K and play the games.  Then when his is 1st grade start the formal B curriculum.  I would like to know from anyone that has used Right Start if this is a good plan or will he benefit from using A when he is K?  Thanks for your help!

Actually Carolyn, B is not an exact replica of A.  In B it says that “A child who has completed all of Level A may skip these lessons.”  It is referring to Lessons 1-23 of Level B.

You must do what you think is best.  My son just turned four last Sunday.  I am beginning him in Level A…slowly…he loves math and wants so much to do school like big sis.  I tested it out on him previously, and he ate it up.  So I figure I will pace him at about half of Level A this year for what I will call K4 and 1/2 of Level A for what I will call K5.  Then in first we will go into Level B, probably skipping Lessons 1-23.  I found those first lessons in Level A to be particularly helpful in explanation and speed for both the student and also for me as we familiarized ourselves with the methods and ideas and concepts used.  Level B goes a bit faster in it’s first lessons, which isn’t bad…depends on the student and you.

Anyways that’s what I am choosing to do.  HTH

For us the economy (besides that I used it for big sis) is that I bought Level A and then just the add on for Level B…and will use level A two years with my oldest boy….and all his subsequent siblings (2 more so far)…

    Jo,

Thanks for your response because I now have a different perspective on level A.  I had never thought about the speed at which the lessons are presented.  I also thought that having B 1 year early would also give me the a chance to practice (maybe on my husband, ha).  I also have 1 more ds (20 months) that could benefit from A.

    Thanks again for sharing!

well…maybe with Level A your husband won’t need to be the guinea pig quite so much! 🙂

    glad it helped.

Personally, I think your son may benefit from using RS A for his K year….however :0), it also depends on your son.  If you join the Rightstart Yahoo group, you will see that many K students who had a ‘math bent’ found A to move too slowly.  I used A for my son when he was 5 but we had a lot of interruptions because we moved to Brazil, and he finished it up soon after he turned 6.  We went onto B straight after and I did not skip all 23 lessons in B, but chose a few to repeat with him just to refresh, which really helped.  We are in lesson 38 now of B, and he is catching on very well, which may be because of the good foundation he received in A….or it may be that he just more ‘ready’ now :0).

From what I’ve read on the RS group, it all depends on the child’s ability and where he is at!  I would suggest you call RightStart and talk to one of their people there, as I’ve heard only good reports about their advice, they are so helpful.  You could also go ahead and try the first few lessons with him in B and see how he does.  If you find he needs to move at a slower pace, then you could always buy A.  There are many moms selling used teacher manuals on the RS yahoo group.

    All the best!

We used Right Start A for my older son’s Kindergarten year, just February-April. Since he was mostly through Kindergarten and had a good math base, RS A was too easy for him. We combined lessons, skipped lessons and in the end, just stopped RS A and went on to B.

We have been on RS B for nine months, almost finished and it has gotten really challenging. Perfect for 1st grade.

mtnmama–I am going to buy B this summer at convention and start a K year in September with my ds (will be 6yo in Dec).  I am going to do the first 30 or so lessons (or what ever lessons you skipped if you go through A) really slowly and play mostly games.  Then for his 1st grade we will go through the rest of B.  Glad to hear your kiddo is doing so well.

    Blessings,

    Carolyn
