Retaking classes, daughter not going back to public school

At the last minute, my husband and I have decided not to send our daughter back to public school (she’s an incoming 9th grader.)  Partly for health reasons but partly because her grades in math and science are quite low and we feel like she needs to repeat a subject but the school district wants to send her ahead.  She got low C’s in both Science and Math (General Science and Algebra)  But if her science and Math teacher hadn’t taken pity on her and both given her extra credit work that had absolutely nothing to do with the subjects they were teaching she would have gotten D’s in both subjects.

My question is, if she would have gotten a D in Algebra, should she retake Algebra itself or go back to Pre Algebra and relearn the basics before moving ahead?  (she got a C in Pre Algebra for the record.)

I realize that D is not a failing grade, but to me it is quite low.

I vote you go back to pre-algebra…see where she is struggling and move on from there (you might not have to spend too long in pre-algebra)  What program were you thinking of using.  We really like Teaching Textbooks over here and LIfe of Fred.

I also vote for going back to PreAlgebra

I’m not sure what program we’re using for Math, everything else we’ve got pretty much figured out but Math is stumping us.  We’re looking at Math U See but I’m also looking at Teaching Textbooks.  I’m not sure if those would be good for the way she learns though.  She likes it when the textbooks e colorful and student friendly but she learns best through games/ real life experience.  I’m looking for online games to help her with remembering the material.  She does just fine short term, learning through a lecture/book work but games or a real life experience using the concepts and material really help cement it in her mind.

Teaching Textbooks has sample lessons on their web site, so that your daughter can see whether that teaching style appeals to her.  Also, for me it was crucial to use the sample tests to make sure I purchased the proper level for my kids.

Have you looked at Khan Academy, free online? Or Life of Fred stories?

My son is struggling through algebra with Life of Fred, just because algebra is difficult for him. He likes purplemath.com He says they explain things well and discuss the most common mistakes that students make.

He is going back to Math U See for geometry.

Welcome to homeschooling and bravo for your decision:)

So I’ve decided DD will do Kahn Academy until she’s gotten better at Pre Algebra stuff.  I can’t seem to convince myself that buying an expensive textbook/curriculum of some kind would be a good ide when she’s likely only going to spend about 4 months total in it.  We’ve talked and she’s shooting to start regular Algebra in January, that way she can work on it and finish the Algebra book before next August/September and the beginning of her 10th grade year, that way in case she goes back to Public school she can go into Algebra 2.  I’ll have her pull up the sample lessons in each of the curriculums I’m looking at and see which one she likes best.
