So my DD is 6 and finishing up her kindergarten year, but is currently reading at a 6th grade level (she is reading me The Secret Garden right now with very few issues). She definitely has issues with reading loudly and clearly, but her vocabulary is great, and she spends at least an hour a day reading silently on her own. When my son was as good at reading as this, I stopped having him regularly read out loud to me, but I am not sure if I should continue with my daughter? If so, do I need to keep increasing the difficulty of the reading, or is it more for practicing elocution? Does it still need to be daily? I have 4 kids including a baby so my time is hard to come by, and she has several other things she would like to do in her time with me (especially handwork!). This school year we’ve done about 10 minutes daily, and she has made major progress. I am also having her read aloud from CLP Nature Reader book 1 (obviously not difficult from a content perspective) during our morning basket time to work on elocution. She has been somewhat resistant to math so far so I would also like to prioritize daily math activities with her when we start first grade this summer. How long do you plan to spend doing 1-on-1 school with a 1st grader who is a fluent reader?

We are in a similar boat. My dd6, almost 7, is a great reader. Our plans for next year, second grade, just for me to keep track of her are as follows:

    15min/1 chapter of assigned literature

30 min free read of a book of her choice. (This will not be a problem, she will read waaaaaay more than that)

2x a week reading to me from McGuffey or other graduated type readers. We are just slowly going through these even if her level is above them to work on elocution as you said.

Another idea I was thinking about was having her read aloud to the 2 year old while I do math with my 5 year old.

Kayla, thanks for sharing. Twice a week sounds reasonable. My DD definitely reads to her little sister nearly daily already.
