I just received a report about Mary and I need help in 2 areas: reading fluency and math. A program called RAVE-O has been recommended to help Mary with the reading issue. Basically, from what I can figure out, she will read a paragraph completely and say “blank” for those words that she doesn’t know and I can help her with those words. This is supposed to be done with reading material that is at a comfortable instructional level for her. Any suggestions on how I can do this from a homeschool perspective. It  appears that the RAVE-O program is only available in public schools.

Second, math. Mary needs a practical math application. It needs to include methodical, repeated review of math facts and operations.

Any of you have any ideas? Thanks and God bless!

Not sure this will be much help for reading, but Math-U-See is our math curriculum. It repeats math facts and operations. We finished the Primer several months ago, and are in the 10th lesson of Alpha. So far, much of what we’ve done in Alpha is a repeat of Primer, just applying it to different numbers. My ds is only 6, so I don’t know if this is helpful for your dd or not. I just know that Math-U-See is hands-on, practical, and fun for our family. Hope that helps!

    I second Math U See.

They also have a free online drill that she can do until she has her math facts down. http://www.mathusee.com/popup_math_drill.php

And they also have a free worksheet generator on the website if she needs more practice than is in the workbook (there is alot of practice already).

Math-U-See is a great curriculum, but it seems you need additional repeated review and help – As a curriculum supplement, I’ve been using a program called TenMarks (http://www.tenmarks.com/). They have nice, structured curriculums mapped to state standards, and my daughter loves it. I can keep track through updates / recommendations and motivate her to work using rewards, so it keeps me assured that she’s learning –a and she loves to do their short worksheets. She gets hints and video lessons when stuck, and doesn’t need to ask for help, which is great for her confidence. Plus, she learns at her own time and pace, and gets repeated attempts until she gets a concept, with detailed answer review and help.
