    Hello,

I was curious as to what some of you Reading Made Easy users have done after you’ve completed the guide.  How did you go about teaching/reinforcing all of the other phonics rules that RME doesn’t cover?  I think RME would give a great start to reading, but I’m wondering what I’d do after knowing there were still more phonics rules to be learned.

    Thank you!

I’ve used RME to teach 6 children to read (so far).  I asked the same question when my first finished it, and was told “now she needs to practice reading.”  It’s worked beautifully for my kids.  After I finish the book, that child and I take that same time each day to read together.  I’ve used things like the Pathway Readers, and actually, a BJU reading book (like 3rd grade level).  We alternate paragraphs, building up to alternating pages (I read a paragraph, then she reads the next, I read the next, etc.)  We really haven’t done any more with the phonics rules, and the oldest 4 are voracious readers (the younger 2 are newer at it, but I expect they will be also 🙂  )

I am using it with my 4th child this year.  All of my children have done well with it.  Once they were finished with RME, we just read!  Now with my 4th child I am using the worksheets that Valerie has made to go with the reading instructions and that has been so useful.

All of my older children read above their grade level and are voracious readers.  It is so simple to use, even for the Mama.  Valerie is always available to answer questions just an email away.  That is really special.

    Blessings,

I agree.  Just let them read a lot to build fluency.  It’s been amazing how well my son is doing.  Yeah, they may not “know” every phonics rule, but often we read in context anyway and they can often figure out a word just by what else is being said and the phonetic clues that are in that word that they do know.

Simply “reading” after RME does make sense.  Thank you, ladies!  This forum is such a blessing.

We did the same things the others have – lots of reading. When we finished RME, I sent Valerie an email asking this very question; She was so kind to answer and sent a little book she wrote titled”The Picnic Ants” for my ds to read. He then went directly to pathway readers afterwards – the transtion was beautiful. Also to reinforce phonics rules, we use Queens spelling through copywork. Valerie wrote a letter titled “After Reading Made Easy” which is found on her website http://www.valeriebendt.com/ReadingMadeEasyAfter9.aspx

Thank you, csmamma.  I looked into Queens spelling through copywork and that seems like it would be a wonderful follow-up to RME.  We have used Queens Language Lessons for Little Ones 1-2 so we are familiar with what Queen Homeschool Supply has to offer.

I feel relieved and excited.  Thanks again, ladies!
