Hi!  My 8 year old daughter has gone from reluctant reader to avid reader and I can’t keep up with her want for more books to read (I know, such a terrible problem to have!).  So many books at the library are twaddle!  I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for twaddle free books or book series that you can find at most libraries for her summer reading?  She’s reading on 2nd-3rd grade level, and loves books about other girls.  Thanks!

There are so many good books. One great free resource I use is the free printable book list from The Good and the Beautiful. They have more than 600 books listed that are wonderful – and vetted for inappropriate content. (They share their standards in the beginning of the file). They are also publishing/republishing good books that have gone out of print in their library.

A few books we like for that stage:

    Lumber Camp Library

    The Sword in the Tree

    A Child’s Garden of Verses

    The Plain Princess

    The Poppy Seeds

The first books that pop to mind are:

Betsy Tacy and Betsy-Tacy and Tib by Maud Hart Lovelace (first two books in a series about three little girls in the early 1900s)

    Carolyn Haywood books

    Dick King-Smith books
